Vanburn Holder - West Indies Cricketer

One of the first set of players to play one-day cricket for the West Indies, Vanburn Alonzo Holder was a fast-medium bowler who played for the regional team between 1969 and 1979. He played in the transition period for the West Indies, where they moved from being a good, competitive team to being world-beaters in the late 70s.

Born on October 10 1945 in St. Michael, Barbados, Vanburn-better known as Van-made his First Class debut for Barbados as a 21-year old. His first Test for the West Indies-against England at old Trafford, Manchester-was just two years later, in 1969. The Barbadian medium pacer had an average debut-taking only one wicket as the West Indies lost by 10 wickets.

Holder's best Test haul in a match was 8/223 against Australia at Adelaide, where the Caribbean team lost by 190 runs. It was against the Aussies in Port of Spain that Holder produced a match-winning effort while taking career-best innings figures. He scalped 7 Aussie wickets for 44 runs to help the Windies to a 198-run win. In 40 Tests, and bowling in 72 innings, the Barbadian took 109 wickets at an average of 33.27. His strike rate of 83.4 suggests that he was more of a stock bowler than a penetrative strike bowler. Vanburn took more than five wickets in an innings on three occasions.

With the bat, Holder was handy but not spectacular. Like his bowling, his batting was composed, but he never scored a half-century in Tests. His best effort of 42 came against New Zealand at Port of Spain in 1972. Batting in 59 innings, "Van" managed 682 runs at an average of 14.20. In addition to his 40 Tests, the medium pacer played 12 ODIs, including the West Indies' inaugural one-day international in 1973. Holder played in the Caribbean's winning 1975 World Cup team. From his 12 ODIs, he reaped 19 wickets at an average of 23.89 and an economy rate of exactly 4.00 runs per over.

For the West Indies, Barbados, Orange Free State (South Africa) and Worcestershire, Holder played 313 First Class games. He scored 3593 runs at 12.97, with a best of 12 for Barbados. In the bowling column, his medium pace bowling brought him 950 wickets at 34.52, with a best innings analysis of 7/40. After his playing days ended in 1986, Vanburn Holder become involved in officiating and later became a First Class umpire.

Cricket Records Help in Creating a Cricketing Idol for Cricket Enthusiasts

Cricket is game involving passion and the sentiments among the fans run high whenever a match is in progress. Every match presents an opportunity for new cricket records to be created on the field and a player and his supporters are always expectant about some such opportunity that may arise. Every team has some key players that have established themselves as the world cricket records holder and occupy a special place in the heart of cricket enthusiasts. The records not only give the players a morale boost and a tremendous sense of achievement, but they also form the basis of perception regarding the player. Selectors base their judgment of player performance on the basis of the existing records by a certain cricketer.

Some of the world renowned cricketers who are held in great respect the cricketing world are Sachin Tendulkar from India who holds the cricket records for the maximum centuries scored in both one day matches and test matches and the highest number of runs in one day matches. While Shane Warne holds the cricket records for highest number of wickets taken in test matches and there are many others who have created a mark through records in their own field of expertise. However cricket records can be a very temporary situation as every record holder knows that sooner or later some other cricketer will come along and break the previous records. Although nothing can take away the credit of being the first player to achieve a new goal and later records just go on to enhance the passion of the game.

Cricket records also have a major influence in the way the fans perceive a particular cricketer. It also adds to the overall image and impression that the player creates of himself and many advertisers want to cash in on this achievement. A player who has recently created any cricket records is sure to be in the limelight for a long time to come and hence it makes perfect sense for the advertiser or marketer to use the player as a brand ambassador for the product or service. The logic behind it is simple, if a player who is a world cricket record holder for the maximum runs tells you that a particular credit card is the best source of financial power and you should go get it, chances are that his fans will actually go and get it. It creates a winning situation for the advertiser as his sales shoot up due to the brand value of the cricketer.

Even if a person is not much interested in cricket it is often seen that he or she would still know about particular cricketers who hold cricket records. This highlights the fact that a record makes a cricketer famous among the masses irrespective of the fact whether or not they like the game. Hence a cricketer has much to gain if he plays exceptionally well and manages to contribute to the creation of cricket records that is a matter of pride not only for the player but for his team and nation itself.

Indian Premier League 2010 - Most Expensive Players

While the IPL 2010 auction only produced two bids in excess of the player cap of US $750,000, the IPL franchises already had a bevy of expensive cricketers. West Indies all rounder Kieron Pollard and New Zealand pace bowler Shane Bond were the only two additions to the list of well-paid players on the IPL books. The auctions for the previous editions fetched higher prices because no cap was implemented then. Therefore, we do not have a good idea of how expensive Pollard and Bond really are. However, we can still identify the most expensive players in the league.

In the first two editions of the Indian Premier League, five players had icon status. This status allowed them to be compensated 15% more than the highest played player in their team. Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly were the five designated players. Although the icon concept would not be used in 2010, it is very safe to say that these players are among the most expensive in the league.

Andrew Flintoff (England), Kevin Pietersen (England), Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Andrew Symonds (Australia) are the millionaires in IPL 2010. In 2008, Dhoni fetched a price of US $1,550,000.00, while Symonds cost $1,350,000.00. In the 2009 auction, Flintoff and Pietersen became the most expensive IPL players, as they each fetched $1,550,000.00. Given that the silent bids for Kieron Pollard and Shane Bond in 2010 were unknown, Pietersen and Flintoff remain the most expensive IPL players.

Sanath Jayasuriya of Sri Lanka ($975,000), Irfan Pathan ($925,000), Brett Lee ($900,000) of Australia, Jacques Kallis ($900,000)of South Africa and Ishant Sharma ($950,000) are the players in the $900,000 - $1,000,000 bracket. Considering the profile of players like Kallis and Lee, the franchises got a bargain in the process. Ishant Sharma might not be as celebrated a player as Kallis, but he fetched a higher amount from the bidding process.

Other players who have substantial contracts in the IPL are:

RP Singh ($875,000)

Harbhajan Singh ($850,000)

Robin Uthappa ($800,000)

Chris Gayle, West Indies ($800,000)

Kieron Pollard, West Indies ($750,000 + silent bid balance)

Shane Bond, New Zealand ($750,000 + silent bid balance)

Rohit Sharma (750,000)

Many other players earned contracts beyond their initial or base price in their respective IPL auctions. This article highlighted those with contracts worth a minimum of $750,000.00. Rumour has it that Kieron Pollard's contract cost Mumbai Indians in excess of US $1,000,000.00. Given that he had four franchises bidding for his services in 2010, it is quite likely that the tall six-hitter is much closer to the top of the list than his $750,000.00 suggests.

Bowling Line and Length in Cricket - Key to Taking a Wicket

I'm sure if you're a big cricket fan or a player that you've head the term line and length a lot. This basically describes the trajectory of the cricket ball from when the bowler bowls the ball. Basically, bowlers strive to bowl a ball with good line and length as it reduces the chances of the batsmen scoring and also increases the chance of taking a wicket. We will look into this term and describe each component in detail.

What Is a Good Length?

A good length delivery in cricket is one that basically leaves the batsmen in two minds. That is whether they should play the shot off the backfoot, or play a shot of the frontfoot. It's this indecisiveness that will more than likely result with the batsmen playing a false shot, and could even mean taking their wicket.

What Is A Good Line?

A good line delivery is one that once again leaves the batsmen on two minds. The path of the ball is just outside the off stump, but not two far. The batsmen in this is not sure whether to play at the ball and risk getting an edge for the slip fielders or wicket keeper to take, or leave the ball to avoid this risk.

Now if you can image bowling a ball with both good line and good length, the batsman will be in all sorts of trouble and indecision, therefore increasing your chances of taking a wicket. The key however is consistency, whereby you ball with good line and length throughout the over. This defines a high class bowler.

Cricket Mania

There was a time when cricket was considered a mere English sport and a fancy sported by gentlemen. But times have changed. Just like football or soccer, people across the world are crazy over cricket.

Everytime Sachin Tendulkar lifts his bat to hit a ball; a roar of expectation reverberates throughout the entire stadium. Whenever Bret Lee swings his arm, the entire crowd waits with bated breath for the outcome.

So many cricketers have come and gone but the crazy adulation for the sportsmen have never stopped. I remember a phase when I was a crazy fan of Rahul Dravid and whether or not I understood cricket, it was irrelevant. I was glued to the T.V. whenever India played.

Fans all over the world show their adoration in their own ways. Some sport either their own country's T-shirts, or make a tattoo, or put up wall-to-wall posters in their rooms, or even chant prayers for their players in temples. Some can even burns effigies of coaches if anyone dares to say a word or act against their favorite player.

You can take the example of Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India, who was very much the center of attention last year, though for the wrong reasons. When he was ousted from his team, his fellow countrymen went wild with anger. They made street protests and showed their staunch support towards their favorite player. Now that he has made a comeback, the fans are gloating with pride. They are treating his victory as their own victory, such is their fan craze!

Legendary icons such as Don Bradman, Kapil Dev, Ian Chappel, Sunil Gavaskar, Imran Khan, Vivian Richards, and many more still reign among the hearts of people like shining stars. Cricket is a sport when one day you are made a hero and put on a pedestal and the next day you can be treated as a forsaken and forgotten man. It is such a sport that it makes you want to laugh or cry for your country.

Indian Cricket Backs A Stunning Comeback As World Champions

The disheartening exit of team India from the very first round of World Cup 2007 had been a major setback for not only the players, selectors and coach, but also for the millions of fans of Indian cricket team. The low morals were reflected in the ensuing games which the team played and it seemed especially sad to see a team perform badly in spite of boasting of world class players like Sachin Tendulkar. However, team India is known to bounce back into the game at the most unexpected moments and the world witnessed a similar revival of the team in the ICC World Twenty20 championship. The Indian team claimed its position as the world champions by defeating Pakistan in the final nerve wrecking match played between the titans.

Indian cricket is now once again in the limelight. As a team, India truly lives up to the true spirit of the game through its unpredictable performance on field. You win some and you lose some -that's Indian cricket for you. Now would it not get unbearably boring to watch a match where you already expected a team to win and it actually wins? With India, you never know where you stand. In one game the team might play remarkably well with the fielders performing brilliantly, while in the very next game a famed batsman may get out for a duck. The sheer unpredictability, I feel, adds to the charm of watching the cricketers in action. Every ball could turn the game and every swing of the bat could tilt the match the other way.

Indian cricket has managed to evolve over the ages and now has a marked place of its own in world cricket. Some of the Indian players hold high rank among international players and have created and broken many world records. The latest format to be played out in cricket is the Twenty20 form of the game and it has seen the emergence of new cricketing heroes in the Indian cricket scene. The series saw some power packed performances from the younger generation of players while the seniors took a backseat in a very long while. It was encouraging to see team India show a definite streak of aggressiveness which had earlier been seriously lacking form the earlier games, except perhaps under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly.

Perhaps for this very reason it is crucial to keep reinventing the game and giving younger players a chance to make a mark on the field. It not only adds to the spirit of the game but is also a welcome change from the age old style of playing cricket. Limited twenty overs in a game format have added the much needed spark and excitement that makes cricket interesting even for the disinterested Indian. The online websites dedicated to the game of cricket have made keeping in touch with the game even easier. Now live scores, cricket records, player wallpaper and match updates are just a click away. So next time you can simply click to connect with cricket.

Cars of Our Cricketers

All Indians idolize our Indian cricket team. Our curiosity to know more about their lifestyle, their desires, their passions always remains intact. Getting a step closer to their private lives, here we bring you their passion for cars. Our Cricketers have a great passion for cars and they are also avid collectors of them.

Sachin Tendulkar has become the living God for all cricket fans. So, we begin this article by talking about his car.

Sachin was awarded the Ferrari 360 Modena. In fact, we all remember the hullaboo that happened when the batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar had requested a custom duty waiver on the car. The Ferrari 360 Modena was gifted to him by FIAT, after the Mumbai batsman equalled the late Don Bradman's tally of 29 Test centuries.

We have come to know that though Sachin Tendulkar likes his car to be chauffeur-driven, but sometimes he takes wife and kids out for a ride in his dashing Ferrari whenever he is on touting for India.

In addition to the Ferrari, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar owns two ultimate status-symbols, a silver-coloured Mercedes-Benz and a black Opel Astra, which he won in a Sharjah tournament for his outstanding performance.

Former vice caption of the Indian cricket team, Virender Sehwag, adores cars and owns a BMW 5 Series. Sehwag prefers to drive his BMW 5 Series either early in the morning or late at night as he feels it is the best time to drive in calm and relaxed way.

Open Gautam Gambhir loves speed! This guy from the capital city is also obsessed with cars. The Indian opener was on the headlines when he test drove the 1600cc Formula Ford car.

Delhi Daredevil Gautam Gambhir owns a Toyota Corolla, Maruti SX4 and a Hyundai Santro. However, Gambhir prefers to be driven rather than drive himself. His dream car is to own a BMW model and we all know Gambhir will make his dream come true.

Mr. Consistent Rahul Dravid drives a Hyundai Tucson. The former Indian skipper was gifted the Tucson by the International Cricket Council for being the best Test Player for the year 2004.

ODI Batsmen Rankings 2007 (All Teams)

Well January in back, and so is the second edition of Vineet's Cricket Rankings! And though there are some surprises the top of the heap is captured by none other than two of the most competitive cricketers of 21st century - Ricky Ponting followed by Matthew Hayden.

Ricky Ponting scored 1424 runs in 27 matches at an amazing average of 79.11 at a very high strike rate of 91.79!! He smashed 5 centuries and 8 half-centuries on the way to achieving this. Not to be left behind, Matthew Hayden scored 1601 runs in 32 matches at a very high average of 59.29 at a good strike rate of 89.19!! He smashed 5 centuries and 6 half-centuries on the way to achieving this.

Graeme Smith, Andrew Symonds and Sachin Tendulkar follow at 3,4 and 5. So the year 2007 was heavily dominated by Australian Batsmen, and the same way the Australian Team dominated the World Cricket.

Well, now for some surprises, Ten Doeschate remains in Top 20 (remember this site had picked him to be a player to watch last year). Shahid Afridi continued to dazzle with an annual strike rate of 161. A player like Haddin who has a position of No. 7 in the table continues to languish on the fringes of the Australian team (Does the Australian team also have a Seniorphilia like the Indians?). AB deVillers continued to be in the Top 10, a feat only Yuvraj could manage besides him. So we can certainly take deVillers and Yuvraj to be the players of the future!!

But the biggest surprise in Top 10 was DJ Reekers (Netherlands), and if you combine him and Doeschate you have a team to look out for - Netherlands!

Some surprises to watch for are LOB Cann (Bermuda), JM Davison (Canada), Robin Utthappa (India).

1 RT Ponting (Aus)

2 ML Hayden (Aus)

3 GC Smith (SA)

4 A Symonds (Aus)

5 SR Tendulkar (India)

6 Shahid Afridi (Pak)

8 AB de Villiers (Afr/SA)

9 DJ Reekers (Neth)

10 Yuvraj Singh (Asia/India)

11 Mohammad Yousuf (Asia/Pak)

12 V Sehwag (Asia/India)

13 SB Styris (NZ)

14 Salman Butt (Pak)

15 LOB Cann (Ber)

16 AC Gilchrist (Aus)

17 HH Gibbs (SA)

18 S Chanderpaul (WI)

19 RN ten Doeschate (Neth)

20 JM Davison (Can)

21 RR Sarwan (WI)

22 Imran Nazir (Pak)

23 JH Kallis (SA)

24 MS Dhoni (Asia/India)

25 SR Watson (Aus)

26 KP Pietersen (Eng)

27 BC Lara (WI)

28 LPC Silva (SL)

29 S Matsikenyeri (Zim)

30 RV Uthappa (India)

Where are the top 5 batsmen of the year 2006?

Well RN Ten Doeschate whom this site had predicted as a hidden gem, continued his exciting run by remaining in Top 20. While Nathan Astle and Mark Trescothick faded into oblivion, Gilchrist continued to be a good bet, though Jayasuria was quite subdued this year.

40 ST Jayasuria (SL) (1)

19 RN Ten Doeschate (Neth) (2)

232 NJ Astle (NZ) (3)

retired ME Trescothick (ENG) (4)

16 AC Gilchrist (AUS) (5)

Indian Cricket Players To Earn More Under The New Proposed Contract

Did they tell you that Indian cricket players to earn more under the new (proposed) contract? Check out some important statistic everyone has been hiding...

Taking a tough stand in the wake of India's World Cup debacle, the BCCI on Saturday scrapped the players' contract system and reverted to payment of match fees, including bonus for every series win.

Previous contract system had three grades.

* Senior players like Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag were Grade A players and got a retainership of Rs 50 lakhs. In addition they were paid Rs 2.5 lakh per Test and Rs 1.60 lakh per ODI.

* Grade B players included Yuvraj Singh, Mohd Kaif, Ajit Agarkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and they were paid Rs 35 lakh as retainership, Rs 2.5 lakh per Test and Rs 1.60 lakh per ODI.

* Grade C players like Zaheer Khan, Suresh Raina and S Sreesanth were paid Rs 20 lakh as retainer and the same as match fee for Tests and ODI as Grade A and B.

Under the proposal, the basic retainer fee will reduce to Rs 5 lacs, while the match fees will be Rs. 1.5 lac per ODI and Rs. 2.5 lac per Test.

Endorsements

Restricting the players to 3 endorsements is a debatable clause, though the player's total earnings may not be affected, since the players would be extract their total endorsemens from these 3 contracts to a large extent since the availability of players would go down, so the best brands would vie for each player and consequently the brand value would go up for each player. Also it would reduce the load on the player and unexpected pressure on the player from the brand. In the end, however, it seems to be an infringement on their basic rights. Thumbs Down.

Retainership Fees

Earlier the retainer fees were Rs. 50 lacs, 35 lacs and 20 lacs depending on the player grade (which anyway was controversial). Now the retainership fees is reduced and spread over the incetives. Please see analysis below. Thumbs Up.

Match Fees

It decided to cut down the players' one-day fees from Rs 1.6 lac to Rs 1.5 lac each and Rs. 2.5 lac per Test. Hardly any change here. Neutral.

Performance Incentives:

Linking payments directly to performance, the players would be played a flat fee with incentives for winning. As reported, the payments would be around Rs one lac for an ODI and about Rs 2.50 lac for a Test. They'd also be given a bonus of Rs 3 lac each for winning a series, BCCI sources said.

A Top player play about 30 ODI and 10 Test Matches every year which is about 8 ODI series and 4 Test Series. Presuming 60% wins, you end up winning 5 ODI series (out of 8) and 18 ODI matches out of 30, you'd expect a windfall of 45 lacs as match fees, and a bonus of 18 lacs for winning 8 ODIs and 15 lacs for winning 5 series. So you collect a total of Rs. 78 lacs from the ODIs alone. Compare it to 98 lacs tendulkar would've made under the earlier contract and 68 lacs that Zaheer Khan would've made under the earlier system. Now imagive if they were to win 70% of their matches, the earnings go up to 84 lacs and so on.

Let us analyse 2 extreme scenarios.
